Base Set came out on 9 January 1999 as part of the Base series. It runs to 102 cards.
The one that started it in English. Wizards of the Coast printed it in 1999 and the earliest copies have no drop shadow on the art box, which is why collectors talk about shadowless and first edition versions separately.
